Retail packaging is where your product meets the shopper. It has to protect what’s inside, look right on a shelf or doorstep, and make sense at the price you’re selling for. Harrison Consulting is a UK retail packaging design service based in Hampshire. We work with products sold in shops and online, creating packs that balance appearance, practical performance and cost. Call 07 443 141 606 and talk it through with the designer who’ll do the work.

Built for the shelf, the doorstep and the journey between

Packaging has two jobs, and both matter. It has to sell the product and get it to the customer in one piece. A pack with shelf appeal but weak practical thinking can lead to damage and returns; a pack focused only on protection can be forgettable. We design for the balance: a product that is easy to understand at a glance, has presence beside competing products, and is considered through the warehouse and courier journey. It should look right in concept and remain fit for purpose as it moves towards the doorstep, without promising more than the pack can deliver.

Formats and finishes that fit the product

The format and finish affect how a product feels in the hand, how it is perceived, and what it costs to produce. Retail packaging can use printed boxes, kraft cartons, sleeves, pouches, labels and similar formats, each with its own visual and practical role.

A kraft carton can suggest natural or handmade; a sleeve can refresh a plain box without a full reprint; and a pouch can suit food or refills where rigid packaging would waste space. Matt or soft-touch can feel premium, while gloss can stand out on a bright shelf. We recommend the mix that fits the product, brand and budget, rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.

Designed for the shelf and the doorstep

Packaging has to work wherever the product is sold. On a shelf, it competes beside other products and has seconds to win attention, so standout and clarity matter. In ecommerce, the pack has to survive delivery and create a considered first physical brand experience at the doorstep. Many products sell through both channels. We design around that reality, so the packaging is clear and distinctive in store, robust enough for the journey, and still feels like a deliberate part of the brand when it is opened.

From concept to print-ready artwork

A pack only earns its keep when it can be produced cleanly. Artwork that looks right on screen can still cause problems at print stage: cutter guides may not line up, colours may shift on the press, and files may leave a printer with avoidable questions. We take the pack from first concept through to print-ready artwork. That includes correct cutter guides, properly prepared colours and files built to the printer’s specification. If you already have a printer appointed, we work to their requirements. Careful production knowledge helps us identify issues before they lead to an expensive reprint. If no printer is appointed, Harrison Consulting can point you towards one; we do not supply printing directly.

For startups and growing brands

Startups and established or growing brands arrive with different needs. A startup may need a first pack that works within a limited budget and looks credible on shelf. A growing brand may need to refresh or extend a range without losing the recognition customers already have. You deal directly with the designer from brief through artwork, so the decisions stay clear and the work stays consistent. Whether it is a first product or an established range, the focus is the same: packaging that represents the brand and works in production.

What to have ready before you brief us

A useful first brief covers where and how the product sells, your brand assets, product measurements, and anything known about the pack’s contents. The preparation does not need to be complete. Identifying gaps is part of the first conversation, and we can work out what matters before the concept begins.

Retail packaging questions

Do you design for both shelf and online selling?

Yes. We cover in-store standout and clarity, postal durability, and the needs of products sold through both channels.

Can you supply print-ready artwork to our printer?

Yes. Files can be prepared to your printer’s specification, with correct cutter guides and colours set up properly.

Do you shoot the product photography too?

We can. Photography can sit alongside design, artwork and copywriting.

Do you work with startups?

Yes. We accommodate startups and small budgets, giving first-time brands and established names the same care.

Can you help keep production costs down?

Yes. Knowledge of print and production can guide sensible choices of format and finish without overspending, though every project still depends on its requirements.
